Thriller / Sci-fi
Fishermen disappear, tourists on the beaches are attacked, and whales start ramming cargo ships, overtaken by a strange “madness”. But why? We are greeted to two main characters. One, a whale specialist, works for a whale watching company in Alaska, and the other, a Norwegian scientist and marine expert. As the attacks and disappearances increase in number and severity the paths of these two characters…
…eventually intertwine and we start to explore the deep truth. The well-written characters pull you in first and the development they go through as people helps to draw you further in to the main story. The ordeals and trials they go through only help to endear them to you. The overarching plot I feel could so easily have strayed on the side of being too far-fetched but the author does a good job of keeping everything feeling realistic (to a degree, as far as a sci-fi thriller about whales attacking ships can be realistic) which adds to the tension. Overall it could so easily have been made too over-the-top but it remains controlled enough to enjoy and, within reason, believe in. As with any element of sci-fi a suspension of belief is required in part but I believe anyone that enjoys thrillers and not just sci-fi will enjoy this book. A well-written piece to enjoy.
