Horror / Thriller
This is from an author I’d never read before so wasn’t sure what to expect. The cover design didn’t particularly scream quality to me (yes, judging a book by it’s cover etc). However, the quality of the writing cannot be denied, this is a supremely well written story.
It is advertised as a horror book but I would describe it as a horror backdrop for a slow-burn thriller…
…and it is dripping with atmosphere. Without dropping any spoilers, our story is based around a small fishing town where a tragic incident occurred 20 years ago. Now, in the present day, our protagonist has to leave his New York home and his wife at short notice because of an urgent call from an old friend who needs help. While at his old hometown our character meets old friends and faces from his past but as the story progresses we find it’s a bitter-sweet reunion. Amongst all this is a still, unsettling background. The smell of a firework, the shine of a can’s pull-tab, a turkey vulture on the roof, the strange smell in his dad’s house.
I highly recommend this book. I genuinely think it has a broader appeal than at first comes across. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.
