A very well written book in which we are recounted the memories of Chris Broad who has travelled to Japan to teach English.
This is not a typical book of memoirs – while it follows Chris from his initial job interview at the Japanese Embassy in London and onwards to teaching in Japan and his further life there, the cultural insights we experience are…
…fascinating. Even the seemingly small things such as customs he learns while drinking at a party to the awkward (to westerners) silence after speaking to your new boss. As Chris embarks on his new teaching career we learn these things as he learns them. The best part is that it has a good writing style and is extremely entertaining to read.
If you have any passing interest in Japan I highly recommend this book. A fascinating glimpse into a culture that many of us only see a surface glimpse of.
